Starting a book collection

Collect a subject, an author or a publisher. Not "first editions" in the abstract.

"I collect first editions" is not a collection; it is a shopping instruction with no edges. The collections that become interesting have a subject.

Where the first money should go

A subject you already care about, in reading copies and jacketed later printings. Cheap, plentiful, and they teach you the trade's ladder — where good means worn — across dozens of books.

A jacket protector on anything you like is the best small purchase in this category.

The expensive beginner mistake

Paying first-edition prices without reading the copyright page. It is five seconds of looking and it is the whole difference. Common mistakes.

The second is ignoring the jacket. On a modern hardback the jacket is often most of the value, and a price-clipped or facsimile jacket is a different object.

How to learn without paying for it

  • Read the copyright page of every book you own. Number lines and statements become familiar fast.
  • Learn the ladder, and that it grades book and jacket separately. How books are graded.
  • Buy from sellers who show the page, and ask the ones who do not.
  • Handle ex-library copies — they teach you what institutional wear looks like, cheaply.

Pick a focus

An author, a subject, an Indian publisher, a series, a decade of design. A shelf with a reason is a collection.

Store it properly

Upright, supported, off the floor, away from an outside wall and out of sun. Humidity and light do the damage here and both are free to avoid. Storing books.

Questions people ask

Are signed books a good start?

Only if you can price the signature as unverified, which is usually what it is.

Is condition or rarity more important?

For common titles, condition. For scarce ones, rarity — but you learn that by handling both.

What about films?

Collect by director, studio or format, and mind the region marking.

More: buying books, what one is worth.
