Starting a trading card collection

Buy one set in commons until you can see centring without thinking about it.

Cards are the easiest category on this site to learn cheaply, because the thing you need to train is your eye and commons cost almost nothing.

Where the first money should go

One set, in commons. Fifty cheap cards from a single set teach you centring, edge whitening, print lines and surface wear faster than any guide — and when you make a mistake it costs a few rupees.

Then one lot of mixed cards, to practise sorting condition quickly.

The expensive beginner mistake

Paying graded prices for raw cards. They are separate markets. A raw card is worth raw money, and the gap is where beginners lose most of their early budget. What cards are worth.

The second is believing a predicted grade. Nobody can promise what a card will grade.

How to learn without paying for it

  • Sort by condition rather than by name. Put ten commons in order and defend the order.
  • Read the published scales. The four things graders assess are public and consistent. How cards are graded.
  • Watch sellers tilt cards under light and copy it.
  • Ask what is wrong with a card — the answer teaches you what to look for.

Pick a focus

A set, an era, an artist, one character. Completing something is more satisfying and more valuable than accumulating singles.

Store it from the start

Sleeved, upright, dry, out of light. In an Indian climate humidity does the damage and it does it quietly. Storing cards.

Questions people ask

Should I grade early?

No. Learn to assess first; grading is a cost, not a shortcut.

Are sealed products a good start?

They are a gamble rather than an education. Singles teach more.

How do I avoid fakes as a beginner?

Buy cheap, buy from sellers who show and explain, and do not chase expensive singles until you can read a card properly.
