Questions to ask before bidding on womenswear

Flat measurements, the lining, and whether the fabric was stretched when it was measured.

Sizes in this category are the least reliable information available. Measurements are the most — as long as you ask how they were taken.

The questions

"Can you measure bust, waist, hip and length flat?" With the tape visible on camera. Non-answer: a size label.

"Is there stretch, and is that the relaxed measurement?" A garment measured while pulled will not fit the way the numbers suggest.

"Can you turn the lining out?" Linings fail before outer fabric does — armhole tears, hems come away, discolouration.

"How much seam allowance is left?" For occasion and ethnic wear this decides whether a piece can be altered to fit.

"Is any beadwork lifting, and are any stones missing?" Counted, if possible.

"Can I see it in daylight?" Screens lie and warm light lies more.

"Has it been altered?" Hemmed, taken in, darts added. All ordinary, all worth knowing.

What protection covers

Measurements materially wrong, a torn lining not mentioned, missing beadwork, a different garment: seven days from delivery.

Questions people ask

Can I ask for extra photographs mid-show?

Yes. That is what a live room is for.

Are alterations expensive?

Usually not — but only if there is allowance. Ask first.

What about sarees?

The saree questions cover weave, zari and the blouse piece.
