Describing an estate lot honestly

Say what you checked, what you did not, and what you are not guaranteeing. Then nothing can go wrong.

A lot is described by what the seller knows rather than by a grade, which makes honesty unusually easy here — and unusually visible when it is missing.

The three statements

What I have checked. Be specific: "I have been through the top layer", "I have counted the pieces but not tested anything", "I have been through all of it".

What I have not checked. Electricals untested. Chips not checked. Nothing identified or valued. Say the ones that apply.

What I am not guaranteeing. Written as a sentence, not implied by silence.

Counts, weights, measurements

A count, even approximate. The actual weight. The box size. These are condition facts in this category, because they decide what the buyer is taking on.

Visible damage

Describe what you can see — chips, cracks, missing lids, rust, damp, mould. If the lot has been in storage, say how long and in what conditions. A damp-smelling lot that says so is fine; one that does not is a return.

What must not be in it

Wildlife products, antiquities, weapons, medicines, anything needing a licence somebody must hold, and anything recalled. "It came in the lot" is not an exception — prohibited items.

And personal papers, photographs and documents, which belong to a family rather than to a sale.

The sentence worth copying

"Sold as seen. I have listed what I can see and I have not tested or identified anything. The weight is 11kg and there are roughly 40 pieces."

That is a complete, defensible description, and it takes thirty seconds to write.

Questions people ask

Is "unsorted" a legitimate listing?

Yes, and a popular one — as long as the word is in the title.

How exact must a count be?

Say it is approximate and keep it honest. "Roughly 40" is fine; "40" when it is 28 is not.

Should I describe each item?

Only if you have checked each item. Otherwise describe the lot.
