Nobody is bidding — what now

Four moves that work, and the honest possibility that the stock is wrong rather than the show.

It happens to everybody, including sellers who do well. Here is what actually helps.

1. Say more about the item

Most silence is uncertainty. People do not bid on things they do not understand. Turn it over, say what it is made of, say who made it, say what is wrong with it.

2. Lower the start

Not the value — the entry point. A bidder who has bid once is in. Why a low start ends higher.

3. Ask the room a direct question

"Is this too much?" or "What would you pay for this?" The thing that breaks a silent room is almost always a question, because silence is easier to maintain against a monologue than against somebody asking you something.

4. Change the order

Move on and come back. An item that stalls kills the pace; the next good thing restores it.

The uncomfortable possibility

Sometimes the show is fine and the stock is wrong. If the same category stalls repeatedly across weeks, that is information, not bad luck.

The first show

If this is your first, it is almost certainly not about the item. It is that nobody knows you are on. That is a different problem, and it is fixed by regularity rather than by price.

Questions people ask

Should I just let things go cheap to get started?

Some, deliberately chosen. Not everything, and not resentfully.

Is it my fault if nobody watches?

Early on it is usually reach, not performance.

How long should I stay on an item?

Long enough to explain it. Not long enough to become uncomfortable.

Does a reserve help?

It protects you from a bad price; it does not create bidders. What it does.

Next: what to say on camera.
