A failed attempt is normal and almost always recoverable. What follows is the courier's process rather than Metzee's, so the honest answer is to deal with the courier.
What usually happens
Couriers in India typically try again, often the next working day, and usually call first. Many will also leave it with a neighbour, a watchman or a shop if someone will take it.
How many attempts you get is the courier's policy, not ours, and it varies between them. That is why the useful move is to contact them rather than to wait and hope.
Do this
1. Check the tracking. It often names what happened and when they will try again.
2. Call the courier with the number and give them a time you will be in, or ask them to hold it at a hub for you to collect. Collection from a hub is frequently the fastest resolution and costs nothing.
3. Give them a phone number that works. Most redeliveries succeed because somebody answered the phone.
The window
After their attempts are exhausted, the parcel is returned to the sender. That is the point at which this stops being easy, because the item then has to be sent again and somebody pays for that leg. My parcel went back to the seller
So act while the tracking still shows it in the network, not after.
Tell the seller
Briefly, from the order. They cannot redirect it, but they should know a parcel may be coming back — and if it does, they are the one who re-sends it.
A seller who finds out from the returned parcel rather than from you is starting the conversation annoyed.
What this is not
Not a failed order. Nothing is lost, nothing is charged twice, and your buyer protection is unaffected.
Not a reason to raise a dispute yet. The parcel is findable and a phone call is faster than a dispute. Raise it if it becomes genuinely lost. How to raise a problem
Preventing the next one
- A phone number you answer. The single biggest factor.
- A landmark in the address. Not required, and it works.
- Pickup, where the seller offers it — nothing to miss, you go when you can. How to collect an order
- A delivery note for the seller where it is offered: "leave with the watchman" saves a trip.
If you will be away
Say so before dispatch, not after. A seller who has not posted it yet can hold it a few days; one who has cannot.
More: the courier says my address is wrong, how do I know it has actually been posted, what if my item never arrives.
