Bank and UPI limits that stop a payment

The commonest reason a payment fails, and the one nobody thinks of first.

When a payment fails on a larger win, the cause is usually a limit rather than anything wrong with the card, the app or us.

The limits that exist

A daily total. Everything you have paid today counts, including things unrelated to this.

A per-transaction cap. Often lower than the daily one.

A new-payee cap. Some banks limit the first payment to somebody new, specifically to make fraud slower.

A card's own international or online limit, set separately from the account's.

How to tell this is what happened

The payment fails immediately rather than after a wait, and it fails the same way twice. A limit does not fail intermittently.

What to do

Try a different method. A card where UPI failed, or the reverse.

Try a different account. The limit is per account, not per person.

Raise the limit in your banking app, where it is usually a setting rather than a phone call.

Split it if the seller agrees and the order allows it.

Do not just keep retrying

Repeated failures against a limit sometimes trigger a temporary block, which makes a solvable problem worse. Change something between attempts.

Questions people ask

Will I lose the item while I sort this out?

Not unless the window closes. How long you have.

Does a failed attempt take money?

An authorisation may show and then reverse. What that looks like.

Why does my bank limit a new payee?

To slow down fraud. It is a feature, inconvenient as it is.

Can Metzee raise the limit?

No. It is between you and your bank.

More: my payment failed.
