My card is closed — where does the refund go?

It still goes to the card. What the bank does with it, and when to get involved.

A refund goes back the way the payment came — to the card that paid, even if that card is now closed, expired or replaced.

That sounds like a problem and usually is not.

What actually happens

The refund is sent to the card number that was charged. Your bank receives it against an account that no longer has an active card on it.

Banks handle this routinely. In most cases they credit the underlying account — the card is closed, the account behind it generally is not.

When it needs you

If the whole account is closed, not just the card. Then the bank has nowhere to put it, and their process is to trace the original payment and arrange the credit another way — often a transfer to a nominated account, sometimes a cheque.

That is a conversation with your bank, not with Metzee. We can tell you the refund was sent, the date and the amount. We cannot redirect it, because the refund follows the original payment by design.

Why it cannot be redirected

A refund that could be sent somewhere other than the source would be a transfer, and a transfer to an account named afterwards is exactly how refund fraud works. Following the original payment is what makes a refund safe for both sides.

So nobody at Metzee can send your refund to a different card or a UPI ID, however reasonable the request. That is a feature.

What to do

  1. Check the order — confirm it shows refunded, with the amount and date.
  2. Give it the normal time — Goes back the way you paid, usually within 5–7 working days.
  3. Then call your bank with the date, the amount and the last four digits of the old card. Ask them to trace a refund to a closed card.
  4. If they need proof it was sent, the order and its invoice are what to show them. How to download an invoice

For a card that simply expired

Expiry is not closure. A refund to an expired card on a live account lands normally — the card number still maps to the account.

The case that avoids all of this

If you know a card is about to be closed and you have a return in progress, say so to the seller and ask them to hold the refund until it is resolved. A refund not yet issued can wait; one already sent cannot be recalled.

Cash on delivery

No card was charged, so none of the above applies — the seller pays you back directly and you can give them whatever details suit.
