What is your furniture worth?

Material, condition of the surfaces that get used, and how far it has to travel.

Furniture has a value and a delivery problem, and the second one is part of the first.

What moves the number

Material — solid, veneer, laminate, engineered board. A real difference, and veneer sold as solid is a misdescription.

Maker, where there is one.

Condition of the surfaces that get used — tops, edges, drawer runners, feet.

Whether it is a matched pair or set.

How it can reach a buyer, which decides how many buyers there are.

Why two of the same differ

One listing has measurements on camera, the top under raking light and the drawers worked. The other has three photographs from across a room. Describing furniture.

How to find out rather than guess

Compare completed sales of similar pieces, sold the same way — a collection-only piece sells into a local room and a posted piece sells into a national one, and the prices differ for that reason alone.

Then price your delivery position honestly. A buyer who has not thought about collection bids as though it is free. How delivery is charged.

What is usually worth less than hoped

Large brown furniture in ordinary condition, flat-pack that has been assembled more than once, and anything that needs two people and a van to move thirty kilometres.

Questions people ask

Does refinishing add value?

On anything old, usually it subtracts. On ordinary modern furniture it can help. Say what you did.

Is a matched pair worth more than two singles?

Yes, meaningfully. Say whether a pair is matched or made up.

Should I sell collection-only?

For anything large, often. It is a smaller room and the honest one.

More: pricing furniture, selling homeware.
