I bid by mistake

The honest position: the bid stands. What to do immediately, and what the slide control is for.

A bid is binding. The screen says so before your first one — Every bid is binding — and there is no button that takes one back.

That is the honest position, and knowing it is more useful than hoping otherwise.

Why it is hard to do by accident

Bidding is a slide, not a tap. Slide to bid exists precisely because a button could be pressed by a thumb in a pocket, and a binding commitment should not be one tap from a scroll.

The first time, you are also offered a practice run — Slide to try, with Practice here — this one doesn’t place a bid. If you have not done that, do it before your next show. How to place a bid

If it happens anyway

Tell the seller immediately, in the chat and by message.

They cannot remove the bid. What they can do is decide how to handle it if you win — relist it, or not hold it against you. A seller who hears "sorry, that was a mis-slide, I don't want it at that price" while the item is still running has options. One who finds out when you do not pay has none.

That message is the whole of what you can do, and doing it early is the difference between an awkward moment and a strike.

If you win it

Two choices, and neither is comfortable:

Pay for it. Usually the right answer for a small amount. It costs you the money and nothing else.

Let it lapse. The win goes to the under-bidder and you take a strike. Three inside ninety days pauses your bidding, and strikes age out — so one is survivable. What happens if I don't pay

Paying and reselling it later is often cheaper than a strike if the amount is small. If the amount is large, a strike may genuinely be the lesser cost. That is your arithmetic, not ours.

The case the rule exists for

Worth understanding rather than resenting. If bids could be withdrawn, every auction would end with the top bidder reconsidering, and the under-bidder would never know whether they had won. The whole format rests on a bid meaning something.

The same rule protects you when you win: nobody above you can quietly withdraw and leave you paying more than the bidding justified.

What actually prevents it

  • Do the practice slide. Thirty seconds, once.
  • Use Bid rather than Custom bid unless you mean to jump. A custom amount is where the expensive typos live.
  • Decide your number before the item opens, so your hand is not making the decision.

More: how bidding works, what does outbid mean, can I pay later.
