Yes. Jewellery is one of the larger categories here, and gold, silver and precious stones all sell.
Three things to get right, and only one of them is ours.
1. Hallmarking is the law, not our policy
For gold jewellery sold in India, hallmarking is a legal requirement administered by BIS, not something Metzee invented or can waive.
A hallmarked piece carries three marks:
- The BIS logo
- The purity, in caratage and fineness —
22K916,18K750,14K585 - A six-character alphanumeric HUID, unique to that piece
A buyer can check a HUID in the BIS CARE app. That is the point of it: verification that does not depend on trusting the seller.
And the recourse is real. Under the hallmarking regulations, a buyer who has an item tested and found below its marked purity is entitled to twice the shortfall in value, plus the testing charges.
So this is not paperwork. It is a legal promise attached to each piece, and selling an unhallmarked piece as hallmarked gold is not a marketplace rule you are bending.
If you are not sure whether what you have is hallmarked, do not describe it as hallmarked. Describe what you can see and say what you do not know.
2. Describe it the way a buyer checks it
Photograph the marks — the logo, the purity, the HUID — as one of your six photos. For jewellery buyers that photograph is the listing.
State the weight. State whether stones are included in the weight. State what the piece has been through: resized, re-polished, repaired, re-plated. How to write a condition description.
For anything inherited or bought at a clearance, say what you cannot confirm.
3. The delivery risk is yours to manage
A gold parcel is the one case where the generic advice is not enough.
- Nothing identifying the contents on the outside. Ever.
- Tracking, always, and a courier you actually trust.
- Photograph the item before packing and the sealed parcel, every time. For high-value items this is not optional — it is the evidence a dispute is decided on, and evidence can only be produced, never created afterwards. How to pack an order.
- Consider pickup for the highest-value pieces. Handing something over in person removes the transit risk entirely. How to offer pickup.
- A reserve is justified here, more than almost anywhere, because the floor is set by metal weight rather than by you. How to set a reserve price.
What Metzee does not do
We do not test, certify, value or authenticate your piece. The hallmark does that, and the buyer verifies it. Anyone describing Metzee as a guarantee of purity is describing something that does not exist.
