The seller is holding it up and I still cannot see it

Ask. What a reasonable seller will do, and what it tells you if they will not.

Ask in the chat. That is the whole answer, and it works more often than people expect because a seller wants you to see it — they are trying to sell it.

How to ask so it gets answered

Be specific about what you want to see. A seller holding forty items up over an hour cannot act on "can I see it closer".

  • "Can you show the label?"
  • "Is there a mark on the back?"
  • "Can you show the hallmark?"
  • "What does the sole look like?"

Ask about {title} attaches your question to the current item rather than dropping it into general chat, which makes it much more likely to be seen.

What a reasonable seller will do

  • Bring it closer to the camera. Five seconds.
  • Turn it over. Another five.
  • Say what you cannot see — "there's a small mark here, about a centimetre".
  • Hold it next to something for scale.

None of that is a favour. It is the job: a live auction is somebody describing an object to people who cannot touch it.

What it tells you if they will not

If a seller ignores a direct question about a flaw, stop bidding on that item.

That is the single most useful signal available to you in a live show. Not rudeness — plenty of sellers miss a message in a busy chat. But a question repeated once and still ignored, on an item about to close, is a reason to let it go.

An item you cannot see properly and cannot ask about is an item you are buying on trust alone, and the price in a live room rarely reflects that discount.

Why this matters more than it seems

A flaw you did not see is also a flaw that was not described — and a misdescribed item is returnable for 7 days whatever the store's returns policy says. So you are protected.

But a return is a fortnight of messages, postage and waiting. Thirty seconds of asking is cheaper than being right later. How to describe condition honestly

The other reason you cannot see it

Check whether the problem is your end. If the picture is blurry, green, frozen or several seconds behind, the item may be perfectly well presented and your device is not showing it. The video is green, black or upside down, the seller is answering things before I see them.

For collection orders

If you are collecting, you get the best version of this: you look at the actual item before you hand over your pickup code. How to collect an order.
