Using Metzee in your own language

Eleven Indian languages and English. What is translated, what is not, and how to switch.

Metzee is in eleven Indian languages and English: Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

Not a partial translation of the important screens — the whole app.

How to switch

In your settings. It changes immediately and sticks to your account, so it follows you to another device. How to change the language

The picker shows each language in its own script, which is what people actually look for.

What is translated

The app. Every screen, every button, every message you meet in normal use.

Emails and messages Metzee sends you.

Urdu reads right to left, with the layout flipped rather than the text pasted into a left-to-right design.

What is not

What sellers write. Titles, descriptions, store policies and chat are in whatever language the seller used. Metzee does not translate them, and would not do it well if it tried — a machine translation of a condition description is exactly where a return comes from.

So a store writing in Tamil is selling in Tamil. Many write in two languages, and asking is reasonable: a seller would far rather answer in your language than take a return. How to ask a seller about an item, live

A small number of server messages. Some error messages from the server are still English — these are mostly refusals you meet when something goes wrong, and they are being cleared. If you hit one, it is a gap rather than a decision.

Live speech. A host talks in their own language. There are no subtitles.

What this is for

Most people in India do not read English comfortably, and a marketplace that only works in English is a marketplace for a minority of the country.

A bid is a commitment. Nobody should be making one by guessing at a screen. Eleven languages

If something reads badly

Translations are reviewed, and an awkward one is worth reporting — a word that is technically right and wrong in use is exactly what a reviewer cannot catch alone. Reporting a wrong or awkward translation

If the app is in a language you did not choose

Usually a device setting rather than Metzee, and it is fixed from the picker in two taps. The screen is in the wrong language

For sellers

Writing in the language your buyers read is worth more than any promotion. If your audience is local, write locally — and say in your store page which languages you answer in. Language and your buyers
