What happens to an item nobody bids on

Nothing bad. What the seller can do next, and what it tells both sides.

The auction closes unsold. The item is not gone, not wasted, and nothing is charged.

From the buyer's side

Occasionally an item you wanted closes with no bids because everyone, including you, waited. That is worth knowing about yourself: in a room where nobody opens, items go cheap to whoever is willing to be first.

If it closes unsold, the seller will usually run it again. Following the store is how you hear about it. If they have offers switched on, you can name a price on a buy-now item instead.

From the seller's side

It shows as Unsold, or Auction ended without a sale. Then Relist auction runs it again with new settings — how to edit or relist an item.

Relisting it unchanged is how an item fails four times. Change one of three things:

  1. The starting price. The commonest cause of no bids is a start price that asks the room to take the first risk.
  2. The first photo. No bids with plenty of views means people saw the thumbnail and did not open it.
  3. The reserve. If it failed a reserve, lower it or drop it. How to set a reserve.

And a fourth that is not a setting: where it sat in the show. The last item of a thin show is not the same item at the start of a busy one.

What an unsold item is actually telling you

Not that the item is bad. That the price, the picture or the moment was wrong — and those are three different fixes, which the figures tell apart. Lots of views, no sales: is a price or description problem. No views at all is a thumbnail problem.

An auction listing nobody bids on for a long time

After 30 days without a bid the app flags it as stale. Nothing is removed — it is a prompt to change something rather than renew it unchanged.

More: when nobody is bidding, how to price for auction, how auctions find a price.
