When is the commission taken?

At the sale, out of the proceeds. You are never billed for it, and here is where it shows.

At the point of sale, out of what the buyer paid. You are never invoiced for it and nothing is ever taken from your bank.

So the money that reaches your balance is already net of the commission. There is no separate charge to watch for.

The sequence

  1. The buyer pays. Metzee holds the money.
  2. The commission is worked out on that sale and set aside.
  3. Your earnings — the rest — are credited to your balance.
  4. The money becomes withdrawable once the order is delivered and the settlement hold passes: 24 hours after it is delivered.
  5. You withdraw it, on your schedule or when you ask.

Nothing in that sequence involves you paying anybody.

Where it shows

On your earnings statement, under What came off your balance, as Fees — with the live percentage next to it. That number is the one to trust; it is set per store, so a figure written in a blog post would be wrong for somebody.

Separately there is GST on that fee, and the tax a marketplace is required to deduct. Those are their own lines. There is a deduction I do not recognise

What it is not charged on

Nothing before a sale. Listing is free, relisting is free, running a show is free, an unsold auction costs nothing. Does it cost anything to list?

Not on the delivery you collect. The fee is worked out on the item, not on the shipping. Is commission charged on the delivery I collect?

If a sale comes undone

A fully refunded order is not a sale, so no commission stands on it — your statement marks it as not counted.

A partial refund keeps it a sale, with your earnings reduced by what you refunded. Do I get the fee back if I refund the buyer?

The practical consequence for pricing

Because the fee comes out of the price rather than being added to it, your start price is a gross figure. The number you set is what the buyer pays and what the fee is taken from — so when you decide what an item must fetch, work backwards from what you need to keep.

Prices on Metzee are also GST-inclusive, which compounds the same point. Do the prices include tax?

For the fee itself

Metzee issues an invoice for its fees, which is the document your accountant wants for the expense side. Where is my invoice for Metzee's fees?
