Do I need to charge GST on what I sell?

Whether you charge it depends on your registration. Whether you need a tax identity does not — every seller needs one.

Two different questions, and the second one is the one that stops you selling.

Every seller needs a tax identity

Not optional, and not only for big stores. To sell on Metzee you need one of two things:

  • A GSTIN, if your business is registered for GST. Fifteen characters, and the screen checks the format.
  • An ECO enrolment number — the shorter route, for suppliers who sell through an e-commerce operator and have no GSTIN of their own. Metzee is that operator.

Onboarding asks which you have: I’m registered for GST, I have an ECO enrolment number, or neither.

If you have neither

You are not turned away. You can build the store, set your prices and rehearse a live show — as the screen says: That’s fine — carry on. What you cannot do is sell, and selling opens once your enrolment comes through.

The enrolment route is free and takes minutes. There is a step-by-step guide inside Seller Tools for exactly this, and it is the right next thing to do rather than something to postpone. I only want to sell a few things

Whether you charge GST

That follows your registration, not Metzee’s rules.

Registered for GST: you charge it, at the rate for what you sell, and you account for it in your own returns.

On the enrolment route, not registered: you are not charging GST on your sales.

The part that surprises people

Prices on Metzee include tax. The number you set is what the buyer pays — tax is worked out from inside it, not added on top at checkout. The terms put it plainly: prices include GST where the seller charges it.

So a registered seller pricing an item at ₹1,000 has priced it including whatever GST applies. If you are used to quoting a price and adding tax, this is the habit to break, because getting it wrong means absorbing the tax out of your margin. Do the prices include tax?

What Metzee does separately

Metzee charges its own commission and GST on that commission, and both are shown in Seller Tools before and after each sale. That is tax on a service supplied to you, and it is nothing to do with the tax on your sales. There is a deduction I do not recognise

Metzee also collects TCS and TDS where the law requires and shows them in Finance. Why was tax deducted from my payout?

Where this page stops

It stops at what Metzee asks for and what its screens do. Rates, thresholds, whether you should register, and what you owe are questions for an accountant — the Finance screen says so itself: For your records — confirm GST and income tax with your accountant.

That is not a dodge. Registration has consequences in both directions, and the answer depends on your turnover, what you sell and where your buyers are.

More: what it costs to sell, can I get a yearly summary, how to get verified.
