Most of what a big store does, you can ignore. One thing you cannot, and it is the thing that sounds most like red tape.
What you can skip
Shipping profiles and zones. Sell locally or by pickup and you never touch a courier.
A schedule. Shows are optional. Plenty of stores only ever use plain listings. Can I sell without going live?
Promotions, boosts, teams, stories. All of it. A store with five items does not need any of it, and spending on a boost before you know whether the thing sells is money ahead of information.
Levels and tiers. Starter is a real place to stay. It gives you five listing slots, which is more than a few things.
What you cannot skip
A tax identity. Every seller on Metzee needs a GSTIN or an ECO enrolment number — the short route made for suppliers who sell through a marketplace and are not registered for GST.
This is the one people try to defer, and it is the one that stops a sale. You can build the store, price things and rehearse a show without it. You cannot sell.
The good news: the enrolment route is free and takes minutes, and there is a step-by-step guide inside Seller Tools. Do I need to charge GST on what I sell?
A verified mobile number and a bank account, because that is how the money reaches you. Setting up payouts
Honest descriptions. Not paperwork, and the one that actually decides whether a few sales go well. A flaw named costs you nothing; a flaw found by the buyer costs you a return and a mark on your record. How to write a condition description
What calling it a hobby does not change
A buyer who pays you has the same rights whichever way you think of yourself: the item must match its description, it must be posted within your stated dispatch time, and a faulty item can come back for 7 days whatever your returns policy says.
So a small seller is held to the same standards as a large one. The standards are just easy to meet when you only have five things and you described them properly.
A realistic start
- Get the tax identity sorted first, because everything waits on it.
- List two or three things, well photographed, honestly described.
- Set pickup or local delivery if that suits — simpler than a courier, and no weight surprises. How to offer pickup
- See what happens before buying anything or building anything.
Nothing in that list costs money. Listing is free, relisting is free, and there is no monthly charge. Does it cost anything to list?
And if it grows
Then the rest is there when you want it, in the order you need it. Nothing has to be decided now.
